This course is an introduction to Moment Work Level 1, the devising method that created The Laramie Project, Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde, Here There Are Blueberries, and others.  We will focus on the form of theatre: what we can create with the elements of theatre (sound, lights, costumes, props, etc.) without relying on text to inform our work.  We will act like archeologists with these elements, discovering their potential through active engagement and play.  By diving deeply into the form of theatre, we will be able to make moments that are uniquely theatrical and forever change our standard approach to playmaking.

We will also discuss why this method is so groundbreaking- as it topples the hierarchy we have all grown accustomed to in this art.  Moment Work provides an alternate to starting with text, working through a director’s vision of that text, designer’s interpretation of the text, and actors trying to pander to this vision.  Instead, we all have equal voices in creation, including the traditionally underrepresented.  Imagine a process by which a lighting designer can create an acting moment, or an actor can create a sound moment.  When everyone is working together outside of the traditional theatrical feudalistic system, the product is better and the process is more collaborative and fun.

Michael Vincent has been the Johns Hopkins University Theatre Program’s Technical Director and production designer since 2009, most recently designing aspects of Passage, Galileo and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Other recent projects include lighting design for Becoming Wendy at Towson University Center for the Arts, and Technical Director for RENT at ArtsCentric. He has also built and designed sets at The Strand Theatre and Fell’s Point Corner Theatre. He currently teaches Devising Theatre: Moment Work and Elements of Theatrical Design at Hopkins. Michael is a graduate of the JHU Theatre Program and has an MFA in Theatre Arts from Towson University. Michael is certified trained by the Moment Work Institute and an experienced Moment Work instructor.
