FPCT Spotlight - October 9, 2011
Tom Burns
How did you get involved with The Little Dog Laughed?
Tom: Steve asked me to audition, and it was a chance to work with my friend Holly.
What makes TLDL special?
Tom: It's edgy, funny, and really well written.
Why do you think people should come see this show?
Tom: It's a smart play that on its surface is comedic and, at times, outrageously vulgar, but underneath, it is really about four complex people chasing what they think they want. Plus there's nudity, so what's not to like?
What is challenging about your role, and are you anything like your character?
Tom: I think every gay man has identified with Mitchell at some point along their journey, if only briefly. In this play, the writing is what makes it fun. What's not written is what makes it challenging.
What has it been like working with the director, Steve?
Tom: It's been great, a very explorative rehearsal process.
When you aren't acting, what else do you do?
Tom: I negotiate contracts for Johns Hopkins University.
.
What are the challenges of balancing regular life with work in the theater?
Tom: Time management is the eternal challenge. I've gotten better but still struggle.
What keeps you coming back to the theater?
Tom: New roles, new people, and just a general love of performing.
What is the craziest thing you've ever had to do on stage?
Tom: I believe I am doing it in this show!
What is on the horizon?
Tom: A much needed hiatus!
