Rodney Bonds
How did you get involved in The Seafarer?
Rodney: I saw the audition notice and having known Barry for lots of years I knew this was one I wanted to do. Richard sounded like a perfect role for me and I really liked the script.
What are your thoughts on The Seafarer from an actor's point of view?
Rodney: The play is a complex black comedy. Finding the balance between the comedy and the intense drama is a challenge and great fun.
Why do you think people should come see The Seafarer?
Rodney: It's a fun play with something to say. If you like Irish playwrights, this is one of the best.
What are the challenges of playing Richard, and are you anything like him?
Rodney: This is the first time I've tried to play a blind character. And on top of that a drunk, blind character...with an Irish accent. This play has plenty of challenge. And no, I'm nothing like Richard. I actually drink very little and I hope I'm not as sarcastic as he is...although I share much of his humor and faith.
What has it been like working with Barry Feinstein, the director?
Rodney: Barry is always a joy and a trial. He can drive you crazy but you always know he cares about the play and especially about his actors.
What else do you do when you aren't acting?
Rodney: There is something other than acting?
What keeps you coming back to the stage?
Rodney: It sounds cliché, but it's in my blood. There was a stretch of about 5 years when I did no theater at all, between my graduation from college (FSU) and graduation from law school(U of B), and I was hugely unhappy. I heard about an audition for a play at Vags called 6 Rms River View, and I decided to audition. As soon as my foot hit the stage at Vags I thought to myself, "at last, I'm home." I haven't been off stage for long since.
Do you have any favorite roles you've played in the past?
Rodney: I've been acting for over 40 years, so many roles fit that bill, some are: Teyve, King Arthur, Sky Masterson, El Gallo, Artie Shaughnessy, Atticus Finch, George (In Chapter Two), Petie Maxwell, and Richard in The Seafarer.
What is your dream role?
Rodney: I would love to do Dr. Dysart in Equus and I'd like another chance at Tevye.
